I’ll never forget the day that my husband confessed his pornography addiction and subsequent infidelity to me. Even though he basically transferred his burden onto my shoulders, I saw a difference in him. The secret that he carried for so long was now exposed.
With that exposure came freedom like you wouldn’t believe.
"Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results." (James 5:16 NLT)
I love this verse because it talks about the body of Christ doing life together. We are called to bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2), encourage each other (1 Thess. 5:11) and according to James, be there as our friends confess their sins to us.
Don’t misunderstand this verse. We don’t confess our sins to each other to find forgiveness. That’s God’s role (1 John 1:9). James is telling us that when we confess our sins to those closest to us, that we will find healing and freedom because our sins are not festering in the dark anymore. Not only that, but our spiritual enemy, who seeks to kill, steal and destroy, has lost his grip on us. He no longer has the ability to keep us in a prison of silence. With our willingness to confess to our friends, we have silenced him.
Can I please get an amen?
My encouragement for you today is to live out James 5:16. So many of us get trapped in our sin and can’t figure out how we’ll ever get free from them. Just share it. I believe with my whole heart that when you allow your friends to bear your burden and hold you accountable, you will experience a whole new level in your relationship with Christ.
And when you taste freedom, you will see that it’s more contagious than bondage.
